Google is a major part of everyday life. As the top search engine, we use it for everything from finding a pasta recipe to information on the possible whereabouts of an old friend. Now, OnStar is teaming up with Google to help create a new app for the Chevy Volt. Just another reason to get excited about GM’s newest auto!
While OnStar insists that their core focus will remain on providing safety features for its customers, they acknowledge that technology behind the wheel is a growing area that drivers are relying on more and more each day. In fact, I predict that a high percentage of auto shoppers coming to Chicago Chevrolet dealers in upcoming years will be looking for these apps and features as a major incentive for buying a new car, truck, or SUV.
The app will allow Chevy Volt drivers to pinpoint the car’s exact location using Google Maps. Also, like a Smartphone, users will be able to search for destinations by voice prompt and have OnStar provide turn-by-turn directions. How nice will be it be to easily find the nearest Mexican restaurant while cruising in your new Volt??!
The Chevy Volt application will also have other car specific capabilities that will no doubt come in handy. It will be able to provide drivers with miles per gallon usage, electric only miles, and other readings from the odometer. The app will allow users to prompt their Volt to start and have it at a desired temperature when they get in. Furthermore, it will allow owners to charge their Volt right now or set a charge time.
The Chevy Volt is scheduled to go on sale this fall as a 2011 model at Chicago Chevrolet dealers. It is a plug-in electric hybrid that can travel up to 40 miles on electric charge only, emitting no gas or harmful carbon dioxide. If you are unable to stop and charge after those 40 miles, it runs on a gas generator that allows unbeatable gas mileage!
GM hopes that the Volt will be the ticket they need to get sales soaring again. It will no doubt be a hit along with other great models, such as the Chicago Chevy Corvette. Check it out this fall when it hits your favorite dealership!
